Enter Eska

In pure sustainable fashion, Carmela collaborated, for a second time, with the artful, colourful, joyful hues of ESKA board.

The topic? A collection of door hangers that open up a world of quirky and creative comms.

Previously, an eco- Christmas Tree project with Studio Carmela Bogman lit up lives, built with exquisite ESKA colour and quality.

For the door hanger, that same precision and innovation would be needed to cut though.

Handle, with the utmost care

With the delicate design of the door hangers, the side view and the see-through aspect of the punched letters are hugely important. The uniform colour through to the core is central to the overall beauty of the product.

The result exudes quality, expresses innovation, exemplifies creativity and embraces responsibility.

Less is more, with a simple twist.

Let’s hang out with Designer, Carmela

How did the idea for Puki Wuki door hangers originate?

The idea came to existence because of my nieces and nephews.

They were aged between 10 and 18. For them it was very important to set some boundaries for whom was to enter their rooms.

Therefore, I designed some doorhangers with which they could communicate in a clear voice to let the outside world know what they were thinking.

Because teenage life knows many layers it didn’t just stop at YES / NO and WORK / CHILL but also the more sensitive HAPPY / SAD and the more open communication of !/? came about.

Because teenage life knows many layers it didn’t just stop at YES or NO

What is the main purpose of Puki Wuki?

It’s communication made easy.

All our colourful door hangers have a simple phrase, and an opposite phrase, which makes it completely clear what mood is waiting behind the door.

Available in three different colour combinations stating: WORK / CHILL, HAPPY / SAD and! /?, it’s a way to express one’s self, in style.

Need some time for yourself? Want some fun company? Busy? Not so busy?
Say it clearly and friendly, with Puki Wuki.

How important is the dual messaging?

Teenagers right through to elderly people, can send a clear message in a happy and colourful way in bedrooms or workrooms, at the office or at the retirement home.

This simple tool lets people know what you are doing (WORK / CHILL), whether you’re available (YES / NO) or how you’re feeling (HAPPY / SAD).

Why did you choose to work with ESKA for this project?

We wanted high quality, durable and sustainable colour; different colours and different thicknesses.

The through-colour feature of ESKA board and the different thicknesses made it beautiful material to work with.

The matt texture of ESKA board gives it a chic and trendy appearance. The firmness of the cardboard makes it easy to handle and suitable for punching.

Because our products are sold in design shops and museum shops, it’s also important that the colours are consistent and long-lasting.

What inspired your use of colour?

I wanted to make sure there was a doorhanger for everyone.

We experimented with different colour combinations. For us, it was important that each colour combinations had its own feel.

The black, blue, white and taupe combination is sporty and robust. The combination of green, pink, blue and orange is vibrant and loud. The pink, white, yellow and azure is laid back.

It’s not just the words that count, the colours contribute too.

Talk us through the PUKI WUKI production technique…

The multilayers of cardboard in different colours make a dramatic 3D effect that can’t be achieved by print alone.

This also gives the doorhanger its distinctive chunkiness.

The production technique of punching makes the edges of the words appear ‘soft’ and not completely straight, giving a more friendly appearance.

Before settling on a final product, we try many models and colour combinations until we have that ‘aha-feeling’ and everything comes together.

The hard part was choosing the colour combinations because all colours of ESKA go well together.

What does the future hold for Carmela Bogman?

We all want a more sustainable future.

As a Dutch company, we love to work with local producers to reduce our total footprint.

We also want to show that sustainable doesn’t equal boring. With ESKA board, we get sustainability, durability and vibrancy all at once.

ESKA will be used for much more than just boxes or packaging in the future. The look, the rigidness, the options are limitless.

And on that, I’ll hang everything.”
